Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene is all about maintaining your pet's oral health, as opposed to a salvage procedure, done only when you can't stand your pet's breath any longer! It begins from an early age with routine check ups every time your puppy/kitten comes for the routine vaccination. As adults, pets need dental check ups 1-2 times a year, depending on their age and breed status. It is well known that small breed dogs are more prone to dental problems than other breeds.

H
ow to maintain your pet's good oral health?

1.
There are easy steps to follow: Feed the right diet. Incorrect diet is the most common factor predisposing to periodental problems. Dry food, as opposed to tinned, is preferable, due to its ability to naturally "brush" your pet's teeth. Furthermore, special formula - Hills t/d is available to help maintain oral hygiene.

2.
Brushing of teeth. This is not always easy, but is possible, especially if you train your pet to tolerate this exercise, from an early age. As a rule, teeth should be brushed twice a week by using special pet toothbrush and toothpaste.

3.
Regular dental check up's. Early veterinary detection and treatment of common dental problems are of utmost importance, since they can save your pet's teeth from being removed. By recognising early plaque /tartar formation, veterinarian can prevent spread of infection to the tissue around teeth - gingivitis as well as tooth root infection and abscessation. Furthermore, young dogs with retained baby/deciduous teeth should be treated as soon as possible, by removing these teeth, and therefore preventing food build up in between densely packed teeth, which in turn predisposes them to periodontal disease and problems mentioned above.

hat can be done to rectify dental problems?
